" Who would have thought you could get such a good plot involving restoring a white hill horse"
A quirky British cozy mystery.
Simon Naylor has inherited his father's country house in the Yorkshire Dales and he soon discovers the remains of a massive carving of a horse on the hillside. Along with an elderly neighbour, Sam, and the hapless, Jonathan Miller, a landscape gardener and charity marathon runner, Simon embarks on a quest to restore this ancient horse. But Jonathan Miller has problems of his own as his marriage is on the rocks and his elderly mother is causing friction.
As each volunteer delves deeper into this horse's past, they unearth things about their families that have remained secret for years and may wish to re-bury. This horse isn't one to put your money on as all three men find out.

Leucippotomy Gigantic chalk horses carved on the hillsides of England. One lies desolate. Can she be restored? Yes, but someone wants to stop you .

This was one of those books that suited my mood, but I didn't find it to be particularly compelling. The storyline was appealingly out of the ordinary, but the interactions of Jonathan with his wife and his mother were frustrating and became somewhat wearing. No one seemed to communicate openly about their feelings or at least level with each other. It felt like a lot of tiptoeing around.

The characters of Simon, Jonathan, Danny and Alice were well fleshed out; but the reader ended up merely being told about most of the peripheral village characters like the butcher, news agent, etc. who seemed to have personal agendas that got somewhat muddled by the end.

British spelling variants aside, there were a lot of typos throughout which were annoying or unintentionally humorous. The author used things like "illegible"when she meant "unintelligible"; "eradicate" instead of "eliminate"; like "a 'vice' clamped his ribcage"; cous-sous for couscous; "you're mother" for "your"; snuffled and "wined" for "whined"; vol-aux-von for vol-au-vent; "weir wolf" for "werewolf" and my personal favorite---the painter of the Sistine Chapel---Michael Angelo.

Punctuation errors typically mixed up plurals with possessives, e.g., "all those lad's back there."

Revelations were coming fast and furious toward the end of the book. I know the suspense was supposed to be building with the assorted clues and strange reactions of the villagers, but I found myself just wanting it to end.

Taking everything into consideration, I thought the book was okay, but not outstanding.

The characters were very endearing and makes you want future stories involving them. The actual mystery was well written, kept you guessing and was entertaining to read.
This is an easy read book with interesting story line. It is well written and a mystery that keeps your attention all the way into the clever ending. The setting and time line are presented well and adds to the interest of the mystery.
Lindsey attracted my attention through the title and the photo of a horse's eye on the cover, it was so unusual. Yet as the story unfolded the eye of the horse was pivotal to the remarkably complex plot. The plot came alive for me through truly wonderful characterisation and attention to fine details. It was hard to discern fact from fiction. Honestly, I couldn't put it down (yes, I know that's a cliche). This is one of those uforgettable stories you never want to end.
