The Night Mares she has painted blow, Clair, away and she immediately wants to set up a showing. Even Paul who says he knows nothing about art wants one of her paintings when he sees them. The trip becomes more like fate as Julia and Paul spend more time together and then she meets Darkside, her Nightmare horse through Sharon at Healing Springs Stables.
This story is sweet, sad, funny and so sexy. I truly enjoyed getting to know this couple and watching them grow and change together. I know I have not done this book justice but unlike Nancy, I cannot find the perfect words. I love it!

Country Roads is a charming story about confronting your fears. Our heroine, famous artist Julia Castillo is hiding something from her new friends in Sanctuary. She's there to see if her artistic instincts are as far off as her domineering uncle, Carlos Castillo believes. Her entire life she's been protected and coddled because she has epilepsy, and now that she's broken free of her velvet prison, she's determine not to let her epilepsy get between her and her goals, besides, she hasn't had a seizure for seven years. She believes she's outgrown the condition.
Julia shares her new work with Claire Arbuckle, Sanctuary's gallery manager and part owner. She knows Claire will give her honest opinion. While in Sanctuary, she meets hunky lawyer Paul Taggart, who must also confront his past. He's given up his own dreams for the future to help his brother keep his custody arrangement with the ex-wife. Sparks fly between Julia and Paul, but their fears and preconceived notions are getting in the way.
Julia also finds her whisper horse while in Sanctuary, and he's a nightmare! He's been abused by his previous owner and doesn't trust humans, until Julia connects with him. The horse and the artist help each other. Charming story with a lot of heat. Read it
Sometimes it's so nice to have decent escape reading to buffer my serious reading. This was one such book. And while I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that I occasionally enjoy reading a romance, when I find one that's well written, I do want to say so.
This "Whisper Horse" novel is entertaining, funny, has a good plot and actually addresses serious issues while avoiding digging too negatively into those issues. I'd say Nancy Herkness has a way with words, a very contemporary but never trite way. However, I find it difficult to fully approve of any novel that uses such explicit, graphic, um sexual descriptions that are sure to increase sales. But they ARE good.
I feared this would be a cheap takeoff on the horse whisperer success but was relieved to find that it wasn't too bad; that aspect was readable without being an embarrassment. I liked the author's treatment of the complicated issues of male control tendencies, over-protection and alcoholism. I felt she made them realistic although she failed to find a way to fully lead the reader to understanding the point at which the alcoholic must be responsible for his own recovery - when a family member with helpful intentions can become codependent or an enabler. It was there, to be sure, but just not fully developed. By contrast, I felt that the issue of over-protection from the dangers of a scary disease that might or might not still be active was extremely well drawn. Thus readers looking for the cheap thrill of explicit sex also get exposure to and knowledge about realistic life difficulties.
COUNTRY ROADS begins with our heroine, Julia Castillo, stranded on a country road on her way from the big city to a small town. Julia has her artwork in tow, striking paintings of dark horses that won’t sell according to her manager uncle. Handsome Paul Taggart, layer and former mayor, sweeps in to save her, getting her to town and the art dealer who is convinced Julia’s work will rock the art world.
Julia isn’t used to being outside of the sheltered world her family created for her, but she soon develops a taste for this new independence and for the man who rescued her. Their passion roars to life with a heat that catches both off guard. Julia, who has always been protected due to her epilepsy, worries that Paul will find out about her condition and treat her as her family did, like a broken doll. Paul is tied to his home town by an alcoholic brother who is struggling to retain custody over his son. Will the power of the whisper horses for which Sanctuary is so famous be able to help these lovers overcome their odds, or will Julia and Paul ultimately part ways on these country roads?
One of my favorite things about the book was Herkness’s vision of Sanctuary, a fictional West Virginian town with enough charm to make the reader want to linger and whisper horses to boot. I love fish out of water stories, so it was fun to follow the big-city artist to this place. The perspective switches between Julia and Paul, and Herkness worked hard to make both of these characters equally complex.
So if life may be troubling you, stop by Sanctuary where the whisper horses may hear your troubles and help you find your way. )
